QUESTION?
I think I’m losing my mind. What can I do?

It’s so easy when something unpleasant or unexpected happens to go into a sort of thinking meltdown. For all our good intentions, and for all the hard work that we’ve done in the past, our first reactions may not be very helpful. Imagination runs wild, our thoughts are spiralling out of control and all logic goes out of the window.
If that isn’t bad enough it’s likely that the mental meltdown triggers a physical reaction and suddenly we are not only feeling mentally ragged we’re also feeling physically ill. The link between the mental and the physical is incontrovertible.
What to do? Well first things first. I think it is essential to get a grip of those spiralling thoughts. Whilst they are having their way with us, nothing good can happen. I find a bit of mindfulness meditation helps. When I begin to feel mentally calmer I begin to feel physically better. Now I can do something positive.

POEM FOR TODAY
THOUGHT PROCESSES
It may be that we are reeling from a something we’ve found out
It crept up when we weren’t looking and then spread its seeds about,
Now we’re caught up in a tangle of imaginings run wild
As we’re temped by misfortune and by tragedy beguiled.
We are really easy pickings for a thought process unchecked
As one thought leads to another and serenity is wrecked
And we’re helpless little victims of a bitter little pill
That the moment that we swallowed it began to make us ill.
So if we are in a tangle let us pause before we go
Any deeper in the thick of this worst case scenario,
For whatever in the future lies in wait to us befall
A thought process run rampant won’t be any use at all.

Of course it’s easier said than done, isn’t it? Telling someone to calm down when their mind is racing out of control is like telling the rain to stop raining or the wind to stop blowing. Or is it?
Plenty of people have found plenty of remedies to help them to break out of their prisons of negativity and fear. Plenty of people have trod the same path and managed to grapple with their anxieties and come out of the bleakness and into the sun. We should learn from each other.
